Alan was born in Massena on July 16, 1949, son of the late Basil and Theresa (Faucher) French. He grew up in Massena until 4th grade when the family moved to Brasher Falls. He entered the US Air Force soon after graduating from St. Lawrence Central High School in 1967, and was honorably discharged in December 1971. He married Ann Dullea on January 8, 1972 at St. Patrick Church in Brasher Falls and graduated from Canton ATC (now SUNY Canton) until he started working at Niagara Mohawk. His Job took him to Saranac Lake, where they had their son, Michael in 1975.

They moved back to Brasher Falls in 1980 and purchased Winthrop Furniture with Newell and Patty Jo Johnson . He retired from Niagara Mohawk then called Brookfield Power and spent much of his free time working on carpentry. He built their home, from the ground up and built many gorgeous pieces of furniture. He loved spending time with Mike, his siblings and their families. Their summer gatherings were a big part of his life. He enjoyed boating - especially taking the kids tubing around Lake Ozonia.

He is survived by his wife, Ann, his son, Michael, his siblings, Annette and Bob Keenan, Susie and Tom Liberty, Elizabeth and Steve Fobare and Carl French, his sisters-in-law, Ellen and Vin Kavanagh and Patricia "Patty" Dullea, many nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews, and many dear friends. He was predeceased by his parents, and his brother, Clark French.
