Massena - Charles R. Hewlett, a beloved husband, brother, father, and friend, passed away peacefully at the age of 79 at Massena Memorial Hospital on January 7, 2026, in Massena, NY. Born on September 6, 1946, Charles is the son of the late Harold and Williametta E. (Baxter) Hewlett. He graduated from St. Lawrence Central in 1966. A proud U.S. Army veteran, Charles served from September 21, 1966, to September 20, 1968, achieving the rank of Specialist 4 (T). After his service, he had a 32 1/2 year career at ALCOA, where he worked as part of the Wire & Rod #140 team, retiring in 2001.
Charles was known for his friendly smile and warm heart, always ready to share a laugh and stories about his adventures. He had a zest for life that drew others to him. Family gatherings often found Charles snowmobiling through the snowy trails, cutting wood for the winter, or engaging in spirited dirt and stock car racing. Cooking up a feast during winter cookouts was one of his favorite traditions, bringing family and friends together to enjoy not just delicious meals but also cherished memories. He was a active member of the Tri Town Trail Blazers Club
He leaves behind his loving spouse, Bonnie Hewlett, sons, Tim and Wendy Hewlett and Michael Hewlett and Danielle Dishaw, his grandchildren, Nick, Owen, Holden, Campbell, and Melissa Ruest and his siblings: Marilyn Gale, Carolyn Kendall, Jacqueline Dishaw, Norman and Nancy Hewlett, Linda Taylor, and Randy Hewlett, and a brother in law Eugene Bean, and many nieces and nephews. Charles was predeceased by siblings, Larry and his wife Marlene Hewlett, Sue Hewlett and Patricia Bean, brother-in-laws, Tom Kendall, Bob Gale, Daniel Dishaw and James Taylor, and a sister-in-law, Joyce Hewlett.
In celebrating a life well-lived, family and friends will be invited to a graveside service with Military Honors at Carville Cemetery in the spring/summer, to be announced. Arrangements are entrusted to Hammill Funeral Home in Winthrop, where memories can shared with his family at www.hammillfh.com.
