Donald G. Hogan, 76, Winthrop, passed away Tuesday, August 25, 2026.
He was raised in Manchester, CT by Anna and Richard Hogan but lived more than 45 years in St. Lawrence County. His wife of 43 years, Cynthia, passed away in 2016. Donald and Cynthia moved to the North Country in 1979 with their young family and a love for country living.
Working for Eastern, Don soon met most dairy farmers within 50 miles of his home and established many friendships that persisted until his passing. He was also a corrections officer for over 25 years and traveled the east coast extensively from Canada down to South Carolina seeking adventure, good food, and a great deal.
Don had a sharp mind and was able to store and recall voluminous amounts of information, especially about his favorite topic - antique guns and rifles. His table at the gun show circuit was a favorite stop for lively conversation and to find something truly unique and interesting. Donald loved a good story and was able to find a connection with most everyone he met, even with his caregivers after falling ill earlier this year, and siblings he only recently met a few years ago.
Don was generous with his time and would think nothing of driving hours to help out a friend or family member. Dogs, and especially Border Collies, had a special place in his heart. He rescued and rehomed several dogs since his precious Trixie died in 2022.
Don is survived by and will be greatly missed by his children: Mara and Roni Dias, Garth and Tara Hogan, and Emily Hogan and Stan Dismuke, and his grandchildren: Maya and Kiana Dias, Alexander and Nicholas Nelson, and Natalia Dismuke.
Don's services will be held Saturday, October 10th, at 11:00 am at the Massena Church of Christ, 33 Stephenville RD Massena, NY 13662. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Potsdam Humane Society or to Hospice of Jefferson County.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Hammill Funeral Home in Winthrop.
Memories and words of comfort can be shared with Don's family, and updated service information can be viewed at www.hammillfh.com.
