Brasher Falls- Mr. Harvey J. LaShomb, 88, passed away peacefully Tuesday December 3, 2013 in the comfort of his home surrounded by the love, comfort, and care of his family and hospice. Arrangements have been entrusted to Hammill Funeral Home in Winthrop. Harvey was born in Massena on November 17, 1925 to the late Leon A. and Ethel S. (Fregoe) LaShomb. He was raised and educated locally; attending Sacred Heart School in Massena, District 6 in Norfolk, and St. Joseph’s Academy in Brasher Falls. On January 18, 1944 Harvey was inducted into the US ARMY; WWII 409th Infantry of the 103rd division, also known as the “Cactus” division. He proudly served his country with pride and excellence; always having reverence for and remembering December 7th, Pearl Harbor Day. Harvey was honorably discharged on January 2, 1946. Harvey married A. Barbara Phelix on May 11, 1946 at St. Patrick Church in Brasher Falls, with Fr. Cotter officiating. They shared in life together building a family and home filled with dedication, love, and laughter. They were joined in a blessed union for 44 years, until the time of Barbara’s passing on October 8, 1990. For 43 years Harvey worked as a crane driver at ALCOA, retiring March 1, 1987. Harvey was blessed with a friendly personality and spirit. He loved to attend social events and even more enjoyed the good conversation. His ability for striking up a conversation was often paired with the buying or selling of raffle tickets that he was also very fond of. Harvey liked card games, never turning down a good game of pitch. He frequently bowled at Gervais Lanes in Moira, and at one time was an avid hunter. Those who knew and loved him will always remember him for being a people person and he will be greatly missed. Harvey was extremely active in his community belonging to many organizations. He was a past assessor for the Town of Lawrence, serving for 8 years. A member of: VFW Post# 793, American Legion Post#514, K of C Post# 2176, Moose Lodge#1110, Honorary Elk Lodge#1702, Charter Member of Lawrenceville Fire Department; serving as treasure for many years, St. Regis Falls Sportsman’s Club, ALCOA 25 year Club, and the Moira Bowling League, where he was inducted to the Hall of Fame. He was a parishioner of St. Lawrence Church in North Lawrence, serving as a trustee for several years. He is survived by 4 sons: Keith LaShomb of Hiwassee, VA., John and Sharon LaShomb of Lawrenceville, Gordon and Carolyn LaShomb of Nicholville, and Nelson and Marilyn LaShomb of Brushton, 3 daughters: Kathleen LaShomb of Johnson City, TN., Lucille and LeRoy Jock of North Lawrence, and Karen and Anthony Tipton of Johnson City TN., 9 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, 3 brothers: Victor and Pauline LaShomb of Massena, Earl and Mia LaShomb of Paxton, AZ., and Clark and June LaShomb of Norfolk, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Harvey was predeceased by, his son Jerome “Jerry” LaShomb on August 1, 2009, brothers Hugh, Wayne, Stanley, and Clement LaShomb, sister Eileen Farnsworth, and 2 infant sisters: Mary and Lucille. Visitation will be Thursday evening from 6-8 and Friday from 2-4 and 6-8. Harvey’s Funeral Service and Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday December 7, at 11:00am, at St. Lawrence Church in North Lawrence with Fr. Garry Giroux presiding. Burial will follow in St. Lawrence Cemetery. For those wishing to express an act of kindness, in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to: Lawrenceville Fire Dept., Tri- Town Rescue, or Hospice & Palliative Care of St. Lawrence Valley Inc.
