Joan M. Cheney

We celebrate the life of Joan Marie Cheney (née Deon), 89, of Brasher Falls, NY who passed away peacefully on December 2, 2025 at Potsdam Hospital surrounded by her family.

Joan was born a twin on June 30, 1936, in Moira, NY. She was the daughter of the late Edward Sr. and Lena (Russell) Deon.

Joan is predeceased by her sisters Lois Elliot, Helen Manning, Beulah Almond, her twin sister Janice Gravell; brothers Edward Deon Jr., Ronald Deon, and Neil Deon, as well as a grandchild, Laura Schick.

She is survived by her beloved husband of over 68 years Sidney Cheney Jr., her sister Linda Perrin of Williston, VT and sister in-law Linda Deon of Moira; her daughters Susan LaFica of Fairport, NY, Carol Hallahan of Massena, NY and Kay Schick of Conway, SC.

Joan is also survived by cherished grandchildren; Meghan (Allan) Petrosky, Nathan (Kristen) Hallahan, Kaylynn (Greg) Ingraham, Michelle (Brian) Gerlach, Chris LaFica, Michael Schick and Jason Schick. Additionally, she is survived by her great grandchildren; Brayden and Hadley Petroskey, Emery Fennell and Harrison Gerlach and Luke Hallahan.

Her family invites all who knew and loved Joan to join us in honoring her remarkable life. Visitation will be held at Hammill Funeral Home in Winthrop, NY on Monday, December 8, 2025, from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm, followed by a funeral service at 12:00 pm. Joan will then be laid to rest in St. Mary's Cemetery in Brushton, NY. Immediately following the burial we will be gathering for a luncheon at L.B.S.H. Dining Room (32 Church Street South, Brasher Falls, NY 13613).

In lieu of flowers, the family encourages donations to the L.B.S.H. Community Improvement Fund, where Joan and her husband resided during her final years. Checks can be sent to the following:
