North Lawrence - Larry Walter Sheets, 73, passed away peacefully at home on Friday November 7, 2025, surrounded by his devoted wife and loving family.
Arrangements are entrusted to Hammill Funeral Home in Winthrop where visitation will be held on Tuesday November 11th from 2 - 5 pm, with a closing prayer service being offered at 5:00pm with Fr. Ray Moreau.
Born on January 3, 1952, in Potsdam, NY, Larry lived a life rich in adventure, hard work, and unwavering commitment to those he loved.
On January 1, 2010, Larry married Sue Anne Hourihan, and together they built their dream home in North Lawrence-a place that brought him deep joy and serenity. Originally intended as a camp, the house quickly became a permanent residence when his grandchildren, Ryelee and Layne, requested their own bedrooms. From that moment on, it became the heart of family life.
Larry began working young, starting on local farms and later at gas stations. After graduation, he joined Cappione's and then dedicated 36 years to Alcoa, rising from the pot rooms to become a respected Pot Repair Supervisor. He retired at age 55, leaving behind a legacy of diligence and leadership. At Alcoa, he formed a lifelong bond with Marty Osuch, his "chosen brother," with whom he shared countless adventures-hunting, snowmobiling, and camping.
Retirement brought Larry to his true calling: driving a school bus for SLC. He cherished every child he transported, often going above and beyond-buying ice cream, offering money, and providing clothes or supplies when needed. His generosity and care knew no bounds.
A passionate Harley rider, Larry logged many miles alongside Sue Anne and close friends Rick and Shelia Aslanian, Dale and Sally Savage, Darcy and Jan Chenier, and Nancy and Paul Lanpher. He was also a proud, lifelong member of the Brasher-Winthrop Fire Department, deeply committed to his community.
During his illness, Larry was uplifted by the support of many dear friends. His brother-in-law, Larrie P. Hourihan, became a steadfast companion, and his lifelong friend Al Kelly accompanied him to chemotherapy appointments, turning each visit into a laughter-filled adventure.
Larry is survived by his wife Sue Anne; his son and daughter-in-law, Brian and Dianna Sheets of Ohio; his stepson and daughter-in-law, Jordan and Kellie (Salls) Shorette; and his cherished grandchildren, Ryelee and Layne Shorette. He also leaves behind his sisters-in-law, Patricia Hourihan and Brenda Hourihan (LaVare), and his beloved dogs, Walter and Bentley.
He was predeceased by his sister Sandra Gillman; his parents, Walter Sheets and Elsie Drew; his sister-in-law Jacqueline Hourihan; his brother-in-law Leo John Hourihan; and his stepson Bernard Shorette III. His loyal canines Jasper and Sophie also preceded him in passing.
Larry's legacy is one of kindness, adventure, and deep devotion to family and community. He will be missed beyond measure.
