Leland M. "Lee" Drake, a beloved father, grandfather, husband, and friend, passed away peacefully on January 8, 2026, at Upstate Medical Center in Syracuse, at the age of 84. He was born on March 1, 1941, in Hopkinton, NY, son of the late Lester and Beatrice (Stacy) Drake. Leland's warm spirit and infectious laugh touched everyone he met, leaving a lasting impact on his community.


Lee proudly served in the Navy from September 12, 1959, to September 13, 1963, achieving the rank of PU3. Following his service, he worked at the Potsdam Paper Mill / Mead Paper Mill as a paper machinist, where he built not only a career but also lifelong friendships.

He was an active member of the Nicholville Fire Department, where his commitment to serving others shone brightly. Leland loved sports and enjoyed spending his free time playing softball and bowling, often sharing stories and laughter with his friends.

He is survived by his wife, Patricia Drake, and his children: Marnie and John Daoust of Brasher Falls, Casey Drake of Massena, Eric and Louise Drake of Everett, MA, Scott Drake of Nicholville, and Paula and Tim Helfter of Hopkinton. Lee was also a proud grandfather to Amanda Drake (Kayla Babcock), Jessica Ayotte (Matthew Ayotte), Matthew Drake, McKenna Daoust, and RyLee Daoust. He also had four great-grandchildren, Blayke Olson, Wyatt Ayotte, Grace Ayotte, and Beckham Sutter, all of whom he cherished deeply. He was a brother to, Richard Drake of Alex Bay and a sister, Lynda Stone of Potsdam. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his brothers, Robert and Gary.

Visitation will be held Monday, January 12th from 2 to 4 pm at Hammill Funeral Home in Winthrop. A time of Remembrance will be held at 4 pm with a luncheon to follow at the American Legion Post #514 in Winthrop. Graveside services with Military Honors will be held in the spring at Mound Hill Cemetery in Nicholville.

Flowers are gratefully declined but donations in his memory can be made to Nicholville Fire Department, 3341 US 11B, Nicholville, NY 12965.

Lee will be missed dearly, but his legacy of kindness, service, and love will live on in the hearts of all who knew him. Lee will also be missed by the New York State Lottery.
