With great sadness, we announce the passing of Margaret Jane Poirier, age 86, of Helena. Margaret passed away peacefully on Saturday afternoon, April 13, 2019, at St. Regis Nursing Home in Massena, surrounded by her loving family. Funeral services for Mrs. Poirier will be held on Tuesday, April 16, 2019, at St. Patrick’s Church in Brasher at 11:00AM with Rev. Mark Riley officiating. Burial will follow in St. Patrick’s Cemetery in Brasher Falls, NY. Calling hours will be held from 5:00PM to 8:00PM on Monday, April 15, 2019, at Hammill Funeral Home, 653 NY-11C, Winthrop. Arrangements are under the care and direction of Frary Funeral Home, Ogdensburg.
Margaret is survived by her loving husband of 61 years, John; five children, Michael Poirier and his wife, RoseAnne, of Spencerport, NY, Anne Frary and her husband, Michael, of Ogdensburg, NY, David Poirier and his wife, Lynne, of Springfield, VA, Paul Poirier of Massena, NY and Brent Poirier and his wife, Christine, of Waddington, NY; twelve grandchildren, Marissa Allen and her husband, Tyler, Jessica Feor and her husband, Dave and Megan Poirier, Jon Frary and his wife, Emily, Chris Frary and his companion, Jillian Havens, Leanne Bouffard and her husband, Ryan, Michael Frary, Ryan Frary, Andy Poirier, Ryan Poirier, Tyler Poirier, and Samantha Poirier; seven great grandchildren, Grace and Mason Allen, Colin and Clayton Frary, Vera Bouffard, Jace Havens, and Felix Frary; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. She is predeceased by two brothers, Jack and Dennis Foley; and one sister, Marie Keenan.
Margaret was born on November 17, 1932 in Malone, New York, the daughter of Herbert and Agatha Ward Foley. She graduated from Cornwall School of Nursing, in Cornwall, Ontario. Margaret married John Poirier on September 16th 1957 at St Patrick’s Church in Hogansburg, New York with Msgr. Walter Funke presiding. Margaret worked in the operating room for over 35 years and later became the Operating Room Head Nurse at Massena Memorial Hospital. Margaret and her husband, John, owned and operated the Helena House for 25 years until 1995.
Margaret enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, traveling around the United States, spending time in Florida, and enjoying her luck at the casino. St. Patrick’s Day was her favorite holiday and she took great pride starting the tradition of painting the Main Street green in Helena the night before the parade.
