Massena - Marion M. Cootware, 87, passed away peacefully, Sunday, May 15, 2011 at the St. Regis Nursing Home in Massena. Arrangements are entrusted to the Hammill Funeral Home in Winthrop. Marion was born on January 4, 1924 in Brasher, daughter of the late George and Margaret Lapage Snyder. She attended North Lawrence High School and graduated from Canton High School. She married Paul Durgan on March 29, 1941 at St. Lawrence Church in North Lawrence; he passed away on April 26, 1976. She married Henry E. Cootware at St. Patrick Church in Brasher Falls on June 25, 1966,. Mr. Cootware passed away on September 24, 1997. Mrs. Cootware worked as a cook at several restaurants and at Potsdam State. Also, she was a certified Nurses Aid, working at the Highland Nursing Home in Massena. She was a communicant of St. Patrick Church in Brasher Falls and a member of the Altar and Rosary Society, a member of the VFW #1143 in Massena and the Moose Lodge in Massena. She is survived by two sons, Paul Durgan of Myrtle Beach, SC and Dwight Durgan of Henrietta; two step-daughters, Louise and Bernard Leatherland of Massena and Bethanne and Roy Beshaw of Massena; three step-sons, Gerald Cootware and Richard and Cathy Cootware of Winthrop and John and Nancy Cootware of Williamstown; 22 Grandchildren; 30 Great Grandchildren, Five Great Great Grandchildren; nieces and nephews. One daughter, Constance Durgan, one step-son, Thomas Cootware, great grandson, Kyle Cootware, seven brothers, Neil, Ralph, Harold, Leo, Kenneth, Arthur and Bernard Snyder, and one sister, Blanche Moquin, predeceased her. There will be no calling hours; a Memorial Mass will be held at St. Patrick Church in Brasher Falls, Thursday, May 19th at 10:00 am. Burial will be in St. Patrick Cemetery in Brasher Falls. Those wishing to do so, please consider donations in her memory to Hospice and Palliative Care of St. Lawrence Valley, Inc., or Tri Town Rescue Squad.
